A minor girl from Madhya Pradesh’s Damoh district, who is a rape survivor, has been taken into police custody for allegedly killing her 40-day-old baby, police said on Thursday.
The 15-year-old girl was distressed over the birth of the child after she had been raped. She felt humiliated, which led her to take the step, said Ashok Chaurasiya, sub-divisional officer of police, Tendukheda, Damoh.
“The girl was in a close relationship with a 17-year-old boy from the village. The boy raped her in February and left the girl pregnant. The girl’s family came to know about it in August when the girl complained of stomach pain. Doctors at the district hospital informed the family about the pregnancy. Later, the girl shared her ordeal with her family,” said Chaurasiya.
The boy was charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act after a complaint by the girl’s family. He was later sent to a juvenile correctional home.
The girl soon developed medical complications and was admitted to the district hospital, where she gave birth to the baby on October 16. She was released on November 5.
She went to the local community health centre in Tendukheda with the baby five days later. She told health workers that the baby was ill. When the doctor checked the baby, there was no sign of life. “The baby was declared brought dead,” said the police.
After confirmation of the death, doctors recommended an autopsy to find out if the baby had died due to natural causes as claimed by the girl. The post-mortem report revealed that the baby had died of strangulation.
According to the police, the rape survivor confessed to her crime during preliminary interrogation. A murder case was registered based on the autopsy report. The girl was sent to a juvenile correctional home by the Juvenile Justice Court, police said.
